This is a picture from a “potato party,” the latest weird craze that’s been sweeping across Korea and Japan which involves going to a McDonald’s restaurant and feasting on an absurd amount of french fries right then and there. The History of CONAN logos

The is a collection of logos that I have been asked to make for CONAN on TBS over the past few years. The original design of course derives from the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour which dervied it’s design from the famous “I’m with Coco” poster. The typeface used is “Gotham” which is a very popular font these days. Here is some information about the history and usage of the font from good old wikipedia:

The Gotham typeface was initially commissioned by GQ magazine, whose editors wanted to display a sans-serif with a “geometric structure” that would look “masculine, new, and fresh” for their magazine. GQ agreed that they needed something “that was going to be very fresh and very established to have a sort of credible voice to it,” according to Jonathan Hoefler.^[2]

The lettering that inspired this typeface originated from the style of 1920s era sans-serifs like Futura, where “Type, like architecture, like the organization of society itself, was to be reduced to its bare, efficient essentials, rid of undesirable, local or ethnic elements.” This theme was found frequently in Depression-era type in both North America and Europe, particularly Germany.^[4] This simplification of type is characterized by Frere-Jones as “not the kind of letter a type designer would make. It’s the kind of letter an engineer would make. It was born outside the type design in some other world and has a very distinct flavor from that.”^[2]

Gotham has been used in numerous other print and media outlets. Here are some notable examples from Wikipedia:

Gotham has found its way into other commercial media, as well. Coca-Cola, television shows Maury and Saturday Night Live, the Tribeca Film Festival, the Qwest advertisements, and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Customer Service have all used Gotham in logos.^[7] The Georgia state government cited Gotham’s “clean, fresh lines” and variations that “offer a variety of options for use in all marketing, advertising and signage applications” as reason for its use.^[13] Starbucks used the typeface in conjunction with the 2008 Presidential election to advertise an offer of free coffee to people who vote.^[14]^[15] Gotham has also been used byYahoo’s website as well as The Criterion Collection’s.

Gotham has also been used by Rite Aid Pharmacy, Banana Republic, Crest dental hygiene products, and Smirnoff Cocktails.

Gotham is used in New York University’s logo and official materials.

Gotham is the brand font for Tom Ford, Yahoo!, Fisher & Paykel Appliances and ZipRealty.

Gotham is the font used in the Chicago 2016 Summer Olympic Games Bid.

Gotham is used in new logo of TV channels Discovery Channel and HGTV, and branding for QVC, USA Network and History Channel.

A modified version of Gotham Ultra is used by Cartoon Network for its new logo and for presentation.

Some NBC Owned-and-Operated stations use Gotham for on-screen typographic identity on its newcasts.

Gotham was used for the popular I’m With Coco posters during Conan O’Brien’s 2010 Tonight Show conflict. The font was eventually adopted for TBS’s Conan logo.

Gotham has been used for BBC Sport television programmes’ on-screen graphics since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The typographical logo of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum (or, 9/11 Memorial), designed by Landor Associates, features a style mixture of Gotham and Verlag, another H & FJ typeface.^[16]

Gotham Narrow is used for the Today show’s graphics starting January 17, 2012.

Indiana Jones Mystery Package

We don’t really even know how to start this post. Yesterday we received a package addressed to “Henry Walton Jones, Jr.”. We sort-of shrugged it off and put it in our bin of mail for student workers to sort and deliver to the right faculty member— we get the wrong mail a lot.

Little did we know what we were looking at. When our student mail worker snapped out of his finals-tired haze and realized who Dr. Jones was, we were sort of in luck: this package wasn’t meant for a random professor in the Stat department. It is addressed to “Indiana” Jones.

What we know: The package contained an incredibly detailed replica of “University of Chicago Professor” Abner Ravenwood’s journal from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It looks only sort of like this one, but almost exactly like this one, so much so that we thought it might have been the one that was for sale on Ebay had we not seen some telling inconsistencies in cover color and “Ex Libris” page (and distinct lack of sword). The book itself is a bit dusty, and the cover is teal fabric with a red velvet spine, with weathered inserts and many postcards/pictures of Marion Ravenwood (and some cool old replica money) included. It’s clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the “handwriting” and calligraphy lacks the telltale pressure marks of actual handwriting.

What we don’t know: Why this came to us. The package does not actually have real stamps on it— the outside of the package was crinkly and dirty as if it came through the mail, but the stamps themselves are pasted on and look like they have been photocopied. There is no US postage on the package, but we did receive it in a bin of mail, and it is addressed to the physical address of our building, Rosenwald Hall, which has a distinctly different address from any other buildings where it might be appropriate to send it (Haskell Hall or the Oriental Institute Museum). However, although now home to the Econ department and College Admissions, Rosenwald Hall used to be the home to our departments of geology and geography.

If you’re an applicant and sent this to us: Why? How? Did you make it? Why so awesome? If you’re a member of the University community and this belongs to you or you’ve gotten one like it before, PLEASE tell us how you acquired it, and whether or not yours came with a description— or if we’re making a big deal out of the fact that you accidentally slipped a gift for a friend in to the inter-university mail system. If you are an Indiana Jones enthusiast and have any idea who may have sent this to us or who made it, let us know that, too.

We know this sounds like a joke/hoax… it’s not (at least, from our end). Any hints, ideas, thoughts, or explanations are appreciated. We’ve been completely baffled as to why this was sent to us, in mostly a good way, but it’s clear this is a neat thing that either belongs somewhere else— or belongs in the halls of UChicago admissions history.
